OptiPlex is Dell's range of business desktops, mainly aimed at larger organisations that want network-ready machines with the right ingredients for corporate deployment. Consequently, the GX1 500S+ bristles with features to catch the eye of the IT manager, including a compact case, no tools needed for access and component removal, integrated networking and DMI 2 support in the BIOS for remote management.
The first thing you notice is the small case, which measures just 315 x 370 x 90mm (W x D x H), making it far less bulky than a conventional desktop. By default it sits flat on the desk, but it can be turned on its side, mini-tower style, as long as you fit a stabilising stand. All this will go down well where space is at a premium.
Catches at either side of the system allow for quick removal of the lid. Sensibly, this ease of access is counterbalanced by an attachment for a lock to prevent unauthorised personnel from opening the case, or indeed walking off with it. Once inside, you can rapidly remove all the drives by unclipping them without any need to reach for a screwdriver. There's also a quick, lever-pull release for the expansion slot riser board, which comes out along with the frame that the installed cards are screwed to.
